Being unstoppable: Ken Leong on his commitment to change over convention

In the year of 2020, digital technology is expected to be embedded into the core of every enterprise, no matter small or large.

But 12 years ago when Ken started his accountancy practice, taking a technology-driven approach was widely considered as thinking outside of the traditional accountancy box.

When asked what it was like when he started, Ken shared: “Majority of firms were more conventional back then; you see a lot of papers and excel spreadsheets around and there wasn’t much digitalization. I had a strong sense of wanting to change the accounting industry by using different kinds of technology solutions to value-add and help SMBs advance.”

While such an approach garnered more resistance back in the day, businesses today are increasingly turning to accountancy firms for guidance and insights into transforming and growing their business, to maximize workforce efficiency or to ensure access to fundamental business services at all times.

For Ken who is a big believer in digital transformation and the advantages the right technology fit can bring to a business, evolving his services to assist other SMBs on their road to success was a natural step forward.

For a business that started with a team of two, the firm has since grown from an accountancy practice to a leading cloud integrator in Southeast Asia with a wide range of services from ERP, OCR to HR, inventory management, an over 60-strong headcount and a list of accolades under their belts.

That was a testament to Ken’s commitment to constantly reinventing himself, and to technology as a growth enabler for his customers and his own business. But driving change also sparked a need to build a strong technology foundation that could support its scale and scope.

“Being a digital transformation company, besides using good software, we also think having good hardware is equally important. Without good hardware, your software just cannot perform optimally.”
For many of his employees who deal with large data sets or travel for work in their day-to-day, arming them with new tools that delivered on the performance, mobility and security they needed made a difference. For instance, lightweight laptops that they could easily bring around for on-site meetings, with best-in-class security technologies to keep sensitive client information they were entrusted with in safe hands.

“In the current environment, adopting technology is definitely very important. That is just software alone. Hence, for a company to move further and faster, you need a very reliable hardware partner. So the reason we chose HP was because of their reliability.”
