Being unstoppable: Nick Tan on reimagining how stories are told

The new media landscape has seen exhilarating change in recent years, with leapfrog advancements in storytelling technologies such as augmented and virtual reality. Just as the industry continues to change and innovate, so must brands, to get into the hearts and minds of their consumers.

In the forefront of leading that change is Nick Tan, founder and managing director of AP Media, Anonymous Production and 360VRAsia, who has been helping brands since 2006 to create powerful narratives in new, interactive and immersive formats. In a hyperconnected time when our digital lives are inundated with new content every minute of the day, creative technology is the game-changer in cutting through the noise and connecting to audiences on a deeper level.

For Nick, the big challenge in innovating in this space is that change is the only constant and there is never a playbook on how to get it right.

What we do often have no precedent. You have to be willing to experiment on new processes and be committed to that change. As an SMB, innovation is one of the must-haves in order to stay relevant.

That mindset for change was paramount when AP Media won the opportunity to build a 360° video livestream for the National Day Parade in 2017, which needed to be multicast across various platforms. A project on such a scale meant experimenting with new hardware and software, creating their own pipeline workflows and adapting to new workstyles.

And at its core of the operation, a command center powered by a reliable technology fleet that could provide them with the stability, performance and reliability they needed.

When it comes to technology, I think it’s important to find a like-minded partner that is always looking to reinvent the status quo. By leveraging their knowledge and know-how, we can actually spend more time to think about how we can innovate more and tell more stories in different angles.
