HORIZONS OPTICAL CREATES CUSTOM EYEWEAR WITH HP MULTI JET FUSION

Customer at a glance

HORIZONS OPTICAL develops and provides technologies and services to ophthalmic laboratories, optical chains with production capacity, and other industries in the optical sector. Their mission is to provide an innovative solution from a combined perspective of R&D and client focus.

‘MADE4U’ CONCEPT

HORIZONS OPTICAL’S “Made4U” Concept allows customers to personalize their eyewear based on their unique physical characteristics and visual needs, as well as their personal taste in terms of aesthetics and color.

HP MULTI JET FUSION

With HP Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) technology, HORIZONS OPTICAL created an end-to-end solution for their customized eyewear, which includes using specialized software to take a 3D scan of the face, collect biometric data, allow customers to virtually “try on” the glasses, and choose from a range of color options for the frames.

Once the customization and fitting processes are completed, the glasses are sent to be 3D printed using HP 3D High Reusability (HR)1 PA 12.

The investment in digitalized and customized glasses production with HP MJF technology results in the following benefits:

  • Decreased production time. Production lead time is reduced from 5 to 6 months for mass-produced glasses to only 12 days for customized glasses.

  • Cost reduction. Costs are reduced in terms of post-production processes such as logistics and distribution thanks to the local production capabilities of 3D printing hubs and Service Bureaus.

  • Weight reduction. With HP 3D HR PA 12, HORIZONS OPTICAL saw a 20% weight reduction in their plastic parts.

MATERIAL

HP 3D HR PA 12

1) HP Jet Fusion 3D Printing Solutions using HP 3D High Reusability PA 12 provide up to 80% powder reusability ratio, producing functional parts batch after batch. For testing, material is aged in real printing conditions and powder is tracked by generations (worst case for reusability). Parts are then made from each generation and tested for mechanical properties and accuracy.
